How your “bite” can cause neck pain, shoulder pain and back pain.

Within the human body, never does a single muscle work, without additional muscles in the joining in. Your neck, shoulder and back muscles work as a team; that is how the body is created. Often times, when certain muscles are overworked, they will rely on additional muscles to help out. This is what is known as “muscle recruitment”.

Your head and neck muscles are involved when you turn your head, chew, talk or breath. If one of those muscles are over-contracted, it will cause a ripple affect through the muscles that hold your head up and through the muscles that support your shoulder, neck and your back. This over-extension of the muscles results in back pain and neck pain. Sore, tight, contracted muscles of the jaw will tilt the head and shoulders causing over-compensation of the neck, shoulder and back muscles resulting in neck pain, shoulder pain and back pain.

A “bad bite” often causes an imbalance in the jaw-to-skull relationship, which in turn twists the jaw into a strained position that transfers pain to the muscles in the neck, shoulders and back. (Back pain can occur in both the upper and lower back.) Sometimes this pain will even feel like a migraine headache.

A neuromuscular dentist in Baltimore like Dr. Gary Imm, understands that the bones, joints, muscles and nerves in the face, neck, shoulder and back have a complex relationship. Dr. Imm will work to correct the bite, relieving strain on the jaw and the surrounding muscles which will alleviate neck pain, shoulder pain and back pain.

Unbalanced posture can lead to back pain in Baltimore

Back pain may also be caused by an unbalanced posture. Standing, walking or sitting in an uneven position causes the jaw muscles to work unproductively. Then the surrounding tissue experiences signs of stress, including pain, migraine headaches, swelling and discomfort. Because the jaw muscles run from ear to ear, symptoms of a distressed jaw may show up in the head, neck and shoulders. The back pain is a common sign of a TMJ / TMD problems. The neck muscles become overworked and fatigued while they try to balance the head posture which is being thrown off by stressed bite muscles. Once the bite has been fixed, pain in many areas of the body disappears.
